Transport

Autogas is the number one alternative fuel in Europe.

With over 8.5 million registered vehicles in the EU and with over 30,700 Autogas fuel stations, it represents 77% of the existing alternative fuel fleet, both through aftermarket conversions and a large offering of new vehicles.

With its cleaner burning properties compared to conventional fuels, Autogas has provided more environmental benefits to date than any other alternative fuel: compared to petrol, it emits up to 21% less CO2, 62% less NOx and 90% less PM on a well-to-wheel basis. Compared to diesel, it emits 96% less NOx and 92% less PM.

The role of liquid gases

To improve air quality today, we need sustainable transport solutions which are cleaner, accessible, and affordable so all EU citizens can be part of the energy transition. Autogas can make a decisive contribution to the EU’s target of climate neutrality by 2050.

Autogas is the number one alternative fuel in Europe.

Autogas lowers emissions of CO2 by up to 21%, NOx by 62% and particulates by 90% compared to petrol.

Autogas is an affordable and proven solution to address both CO2 and pollutant emissions. In the past 5 years, Autogas was on average 64% the cost of Euro 95.

7 of the 10 largest car manufacturers produce Autogas cars.

Key benefits of transport

Renewable

Renewable liquid gases, such as renewable LPG and renewable and recycled carbon DME, are a promising possibility for a more sustainable future.

Carbon-neutral

Renewable liquid gases are a carbon-neutral, drop-in solution that can be used in the existing car fleet without the need of making any additional modifications.

Road transport

Looking past 2035, renewable liquid gases will continue to play a key role in road transport in Europe, through retrofits of the legacy fleet.

Liquid Gas Europe advocates for:

  1. Critically reassessing, on a life cycle assessment basis, the emission targets for cars and vans and heavy-duty vehicles.
  2. Bringing recognition to the immediate CO2 reduction opportunities of Autogas vehicles, whether through new vehicle offerings or retrofits, or by offering renewable liquid gases as a drop-in solution to the existing Autogas fleet.
  3. Supporting Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in expanding its Autogas vehicle offering.
  4. Addressing the ageing legacy fleet by promoting Autogas conversions and strive to extend the market to new segments.
  5. Putting Autogas on an equal footing with other fuel sources by continuing to support existing Autogas refuelling stations that are immediately ready for renewable liquid gases.
  6. Bringing a just transition to all European consumers by making sustainable alternative transport solutions available and affordable, especially for citizens in rural areas.
