Rural Heating Matters: Liquid Gas Europe’s Response to the European Affordable Housing Plan
Liquid Gas Europe has responded to the European Commission’s consultation on the European Affordable Housing Plan, calling for a stronger focus on heating affordability and practical decarbonisation options—especially in rural and off-grid areas.
With 137 million people living in rural and remote parts of the EU, many households face higher heating costs and limited access to modern energy infrastructure. These challenges must be addressed if the EU is to deliver on its promise of inclusive, affordable housing.
We urge the Commission to adopt a technology-neutral approach that recognises the role of renewable liquid gases like bioLPG—offering a realistic, cost-effective solution where electrification is not viable. Housing policy cannot be separated from energy policy: both must work together to ensure that no one is left behind in the energy transition.
