Joint Statement: Advocating for Technology Openness in CO2 Emission Standards
On October 22, 2024, the Network for Sustainable Mobility (NSM), alongside 23 leading associations representing the transport, energy, and industrial sectors, issued a joint statement calling for an early revision of CO2 emission standards regulations. The statement emphasises the necessity of technology openness in the decarbonisation of road transport, ensuring that all viable low-carbon technologies, including sustainable renewable fuels, can play a key role in achieving climate neutrality.
The signatories urge policymakers to move beyond a limited technological approach and adopt a framework that includes renewable fuels such as biofuels, e-fuels, and other Renewable Energy Directive (RED)-compliant solutions. These technologies complement electrification and offer flexibility to the market, giving consumers a wider array of options for low-carbon mobility.
The statement also highlights the importance of a level-playing field for all emissions-reduction solutions, enabling sustainable, renewable fuels to contribute alongside electrification. This approach is vital to ensuring Europe’s climate ambitions are met while preserving industrial competitiveness
Key highlights of the statement include:
- A call for a technology-neutral approach to road transport decarbonization.
- Recognition of the role of sustainable, renewable fuels in reducing CO2 emissions.
- The need for legislative updates to include all RED-compliant fuels in the pathway to climate neutrality.
By uniting voices from across the industry, the statement sends a clear message: Europe’s transition to a climate-neutral transport system must allow for a broad range of low-carbon technologies to ensure a sustainable and competitive future.
