Joint Industry Reaction Paper to the Electrification Action Plan

Liquid Gas Europe has joined a cross-sector industry response to the European Commission’s Electrification Action Plan (EAP), supporting its objectives to strengthen Europe’s resilience, energy security and competitiveness.
The signatories recognise that electrification will play an important role in the energy transition. However, they stress that successful decarbonisation cannot rely on a single pathway. Renewable and low-carbon gases will remain essential for sectors, consumers and regions where direct electrification is technically difficult, costly or less efficient.
The joint paper therefore calls on the Commission to ensure that the EAP is implemented through an integrated, technology-neutral approach that considers the full costs and benefits for the energy system and consumers.
Key asks include:
  • Unlocking renewable and low-carbon molecules through supportive regulatory and market conditions, including access to EU funding and support schemes.
  • Making better use of existing infrastructure, including gas distribution networks, storage and transmission systems, while enabling their progressive decarbonisation.
  • Supporting complementary solutions before substitution, recognising the role of renewable gases, hybrid heating systems, efficient boilers, cogeneration and district heating alongside electrification.
  • Putting consumers and local realities at the centre through cost-efficient, cross-sector planning that reflects different building types, regions and energy needs.
  • Safeguarding competitiveness and security of supply by diversifying energy sources, avoiding unnecessary costs and ensuring that households, SMEs and industry retain access to reliable and affordable energy.
A resilient European energy system will require a diverse set of solutions. Renewable liquid gases can contribute to practical and inclusive decarbonisation, particularly where existing infrastructure and local conditions make them an efficient option.
