Industry Launches Task Force to Extend Composite Cylinder Inspection Periods

Liquid Gas Europe (LGE) is proud to announce the formation of the Composite Cylinder Periodic Inspection Extension Task Force (CC-PIE TF), a strategic initiative led by the Safety, Sustainability and Standardisation Working Group in response to growing regulatory interest in harmonising inspection intervals across Europe.

Currently, composite LPG cylinders are subject to a 5-year periodic inspection interval, as per ADR regulations by default, which may be extended to 10 –years, if authorised by the Competent Authority. However, many industry stakeholders have expressed the need for a technically robust and consistent approach, to be applied across all countries, to allow this extension—reflecting both field experience and improved testing methodologies.

The CC-PIE TF will bring together manufacturers, gas distributors and technical experts to:

  • Define a standardised industry-backed inspection extension procedure,
  • Present comprehensive supporting data demonstrating safety and reliability,
  • Align stakeholders on a common position ahead of regulatory discussions,
  • Engage with the informal working group initiated (and approved by the RID/ADR/ADN joint meeting) by the German Competent Authority.

Over the next two to three years, the task force will work to ensure that any future regulatory or standard changes reflect industry consensus and uphold the highest safety standards.
