Advocating for a Pragmatic Approach to CO₂-Neutral Fuels in Road Transport: Call for an Early Review of CO₂ Standards for Cars

At Liquid Gas Europe, we believe that a pragmatic, technology-inclusive approach to CO₂-neutral fuels is essential for achieving meaningful emissions reductions in transport. Europe’s climate ambitions require urgent action, and policies must recognize all viable solutions—including renewable fuels—to deliver real and immediate CO₂ reductions.

As part of this commitment, we have joined industry partners in signing a joint statement calling for an early review of CO₂ standards for cars. We urge the European Commission to ensure that the regulatory framework reflects the full potential of CO₂-neutral fuels in delivering emissions reductions alongside electrification.

The statement highlights three key priorities:

  • Recognizing the role of renewable fuels as a crucial part of the energy transition.
  • Ensuring a sustainable and verifiable framework for CO₂-neutral fuel use.
  • Supporting innovation and economic feasibility in the transport sector.

Our key ask: We call on EU policymakers to conduct an early review of the CO₂ standards for cars and ensure a pragmatic and technology-neutral approach—one that fully integrates CO₂-neutral fuels as part of Europe’s transport decarbonization strategy.

While electrification plays an important role, renewable fuels—including renewable liquid gases such as Autogas—offer an immediate, scalable, and cost-effective pathway to emissions reductions, particularly in hard-to-electrify transport segments. A pragmatic approach means ensuring these solutions are fairly considered in the EU’s regulatory framework.

We urge policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to engage with us in shaping a realistic and inclusive energy transition for transport.
