Renewable fuels in the EU mobility legislation: A joint letter

Liquid Gas Europe is part of a group of 39 signatories of international and EU level associations, as well as national associations and companies, calling on the European Commission to include sustainable renewable fuels in EU mobility legislation. The group, comprising of fuel and energy sectors, represent a “combined force behind the transformation of EU mobility towards climate neutrality in a smart and sustainable way.” This group of key stakeholders go on to say that “It is paramount to recognise and include the renewable fuel dimension in the upcoming revision of the CO2 standards for cars and vans. Leveraging on the CO2 emission reductions only at the tailpipe level is not sufficient to ensure the shift to carbon-neutral mobility.” Without the contribution of sustainable renewable fuels, the CO2 emissions from the EU fleet will not be reduced fast enough to meet the 2030 targets and beyond to 2050. The recognition should happen through a new mechanism that encompasses the contribution of sustainable renewable fuels when determining manufacturers compliance with their CO2 emission targets.
